Underexposed shots: If your shots are underexposed, they’re too dark. You may not be able to see some areas of your subject or actor. You can see only part of the face, and I’ve lost some detail. Underexposure is easier to repair with editing, but it still isn’t great having to boost the brightness too much. That can affect the color and wind up grainy.

Three-point lighting: This film and TV lighting technique has three lights set up around the subject or actor. A three-point lighting setup works like this:

The key light can be on either side of the subject. It gives the most light to the subject. It brightens one side of the subject’s face. (The actual light you see on the next page is just a prop.)

Put the fill light on the opposite side to the key light. It fills in light to make fewer shadows on the face. Set the fill light a little lower in brightness than the key light.

The back light is behind the subject to one side. It may seem like it doesn’t do anything, but it lights around the head to separate the subject from the background.
